Thanksgiving Food: three soups

I know — the thanksgiving posts go on! And I have some christmas posts that need to get out. But I’m getting toward the end (and missing all the food we had at home). For this post, three soups that I can’t get in Germany. These soups make me so homesick.

First up, menudo! I’ve gotta learn how to make this (although it will be a challenge to find hominy and the correct chilies here). Since I don’t know how to cook this, we got a huge can of the Juanita’s brand menudo. We had to have lime wedges, chopped cilantro and corn tortillas on the side. I also made some quesadilla (mmmmmm, with sharp cheddar!) to go with.

And this was just a wonderful lunch, full of spicy soup and hot cheesy bread.

Second soup, and this was one mom made, clam chowder! Oh, I heart creamy, potatoey, clammy clam chowder. It is nearly impossible to get clams here (which is so odd since we live right by the sea) and i missed this soup so much. Perfect with a crunchy salad and salty crackers.

Lastly, a classic stew that I miss like crazy — a Chinese black mushroom stew. The mushrooms (dried) need to soak for a morning, and then slowly stewed with broth. We added some tender white fish and scallions.
